Hellmann’s Sponsors “Share Our Strength” Lunch

Guest Post by Carey Piascik, BSM Media/ New York

Food Network personality, chef and restaurateur Bobby Flay teamed up with TV star Lori Loughlin to host a luncheon with a dual purpose: to feature easy, delicious recipes using Hellmann’s Mayonnaise and to launch the Sandwich Swap ‘N Share to benefit Share Our Strength.  Hellmann’s/Best Foods sponsored the event in New York City last week, and Bobby and Lori cooked up tasty treats for everyone.

Before the stars donned their aprons, Share Our Strength’s Chuck Scofield shared some startling child hunger statistics. Over 17 million children go hungry in the US, a more than 30% increase from last year.  Share Our Strength makes access to healthy food options easier for these children through schools, shelters, and state partnerships, along with fundraisers and volunteerism.

To combat these startling numbers, Hellmann’s is asking us to go to the Sandwich Swap ‘N Share Facebook page to create a virtual sandwich. For every sandwich made, Hellmann’s will donate to Share Our Strength (http://www.strength.org). For every five sandwiches built or sent to a friend between 9/9/10 and 12/31/10, Hellmann’s will donate $1 to Share Our Strength, up to a guaranteed maximum of $75,000.

Bobby created three meals for the crowd, with Lori (of Full House, 90210 and Summerland fame) acting as sous-chef.  They were a comical duo since Lori was new to cooking!  Each of the meals was simple and quick – perfect for busy nights when you don’t have time to cook or when you only have some leftovers in the fridge.

The menu items included:

–       Chicken Gyro
–       Egg Salad, Cheese & Bacon on Toasted English Muffins
–       Fish Taco served in Scoops

The Chicken Gyro was a crowd favorite.  By using Hellmann’s Light Mayonnaise along with cucumber, garlic, and lemon juice, you create a Greek style Tzatziki sauce.  Mixed with chicken or turkey (which could be left over from the night before), along with some spinach and tomatoes in a whole-wheat pita, you have an easy, delicious and healthy recipe. It’s on my menu for this week!

All of the recipes were part of The Real Food Project, which includes meals that your kids will love, are budget friendly, quick and still delicious.  These recipes along with many others can be found on Hellmanns.com. All of the food was delicious!  I was truly surprised by the versatility of how the mayonnaise was used in the recipes.  I had never thought to use it as anything other than a sandwich spread!

Make your virtual sandwich today, and tell your family and friends, too.
